The dietitian’s office

The dietitian’s office

The office

The diet office is located in the heart of the center of Thessaloniki, at 24 Eleftheriou Venizelou Street, within a few minutes’ walk from the main stations with public transport.

The office has the relevant certificate “Legal Dietetic Office” and at the same time the dietitian who operates it has the “Certificate of Legal License to Practice Profession” issued by the Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare of the Region and is a member of the Hellenic Dietetic Association.

Methodology

At your first appointment the following procedure is being induced:

  • Medical history

The history is the patient’s view of his / her illness along with other relevant information, which we collect from him / her. Taking the history is a discussion that aims to help improve the patient’s health.

***It is good to have recent hematological and biochemical examinations and hormonal tests, at least in the last six months.

  • Nutritional history

Getting a nutritional history is the next step in identifying nutrients & deficiencies in each person’s usual diet.

Τhe nutritional history includes:

  • Υour preferences / food allergies (eg. if you do not like okra, milk, chicken, if you are allergic to strawberries, etc.).
  • Υour eating habits (if you eat breakfast, how often you go out to eat, if you drink alcohol) and how you are accustomed to eating on a typical day.
  • Υour previous attempts to lose weight and their evaluation (if you have been on a diet again, for how long, what was difficult for you then, etc.).
  • The plan of your daily physical activity (if you do sedentary work, if you exercise, if you have a hobby, etc.).
  • Food diary

A food diary helps you really understand the relationship between diet, exercise and weight. You can also better understand if you are consuming the recommended amount of food, if you are snacking in between, if you are consuming adequate portions of fruits and vegetables, if the food intake is associated with feeling hungry or strongly dependent on negative emotions as a reward, and if you have regular meals.

The food diary can be used as a method of nutritional evaluation by the dietitian, but also as a method of intervention at the same time with or without diet, especially in maintaining weight loss.

  • Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a reliable indicator of body fat for most people and is used to identify weight categories that can lead to health problems. Body Mass Index is not accurate in athletes and very muscular people (muscles weigh more than fat), as it can categorize someone into a higher Body Mass Index even though they have healthy levels of body fat. It is also not accurate in pregnant and lactating women as well as in physically weak people.

The Body Mass Index computer is just a guide to your overall health. It is calculated by dividing the weight (in kilograms) by the square of the height (in centimeters).

  • Measurement of the resting metabolic rate

The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) represents the calories that our body consumes in order to do its vital functions (cardiac rate, brain function, breathing). It is simply the number of calories a human consumes daily when awake but in resting conditions. The Resting Metabolic Rate can represent 75% of the energy needs of the modern man and is different in every person.

The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is being affected by many countable factors (weight, height, age, body surface, sex, etc.) as well as non-countable factors (heredity, body weight history, physical condition, etc.).

For all these reasons it is very important for each and everyone to know his or hers “basic consumptions”.

The muscular tissue “burns” more calories than the adipose tissue. Therefore, an individual with more muscular tissue will have higher RMR.

  • Body Composition Analysis / Fat Measurement

Fat measurement is the process by which we measure the percentage of fat in the body at a specific time. The bioelectrical resistance (BIA) fat measurement we use is based on the fact that the tissues of the body conduct electricity, which follows the “path” with the lowest resistance, that is the lean mass of the body and then calculates body fat by subtracting it from the total weight. The application of the method is done with the examinee in a supine position where 4 electrode stickers are placed – 2 on the wrist and at the base of the fingers of the right hand and 2 on the right foot respectively. Then a low current is applied and then using special equations the fat free mass of the body and the body fat of the individual are calculated. It also determines the Desired Body Fat Range and targets the percentage of fat mass that must be “lost” in order to achieve the desired weight loss. So we focus directly on the fat mass and not just on the pounds of the examinee.

  • Measurement of the waist perimeter

Even if the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the waist perimeter are related to each other, the waist perimeter also is an independent risk factor.

This measurement is particularly useful in individuals that are considered normal in weight or overweight regarding their BMI.

  • The waist-hip ratio (WHR RATIO)

It is a valid indicator concerning our overall health condition. According to scientific research, those individuals who have accumulated fat around the waist are at much higher risk to express cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes, when compared to those with overweight around the hips.

  • Measurement of the fat fold

This is a very popular method to estimate the body fat. It can be implemented anywhere, is simple and fast. It is based on the principle that the hypodermic fat reflects the total fat in our organism.

With the use of this special tool, the fat fold meter, we measure the range of the fat fold in different body parts and use these measurements in special equations in order to calculate the total body fat percentage.

There are usually 4 to 7 spots, where the fat fold is measured, depending on the method that we choose.

  • Measurement of the physical activity (use of Sensewear Armband)

The Sensewear Armband measures different natural body parameters and is being implemented on the right triceps of the patient from 10 minutes up to 2 weeks (usually for 24 hours). It can show us the real energy consumption that was recorded in the time that it was being worn by the patient, the level of his physical activity as well as the duration and quality of sleep at the hospital, at home or during his daily activities (“free living”), at work, at school, during sports, at night, etc.

Since all the above measurements have taken place and after consideration of the patients personal needs and special requirements we plan a personalized nutrition programme in order to achieve good health, loss of weight, the preservation or change of the nutritional behaviour by following simple steps of a good and healthy diet.

Preparation

  1. Do not consume coffee, tea, alcohol or soft drinks 24 hours before the measurement. They have a diuretic effect that affects blood flow so we do not have the desired result.
  2. Do not eat for at least 3 hours before the measurement.
  3. Do not consume liquids for at least 1.5 hours before the measurement. For women, it is ideal to measure in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
  4. Be careful not to do strenuous exercise on the same or the day before the measurement.
  5. Finally, you should be aware that the use of certain medications, especially diuretics, affects the accuracy of the results.
